Hoss's Community Day!

I want to thank all my friends, teachers, and families who helped me out on Saturday, December 4th at our local Hoss's Steak and Sea restaurant with my community day. Hoss's donated 20% of the check total of those who presented my fundraiser card. I raised another $89.37 towards my trip which is greatly appreciated! We are probably going to do another one in February.

Here are some pictures of me with some teachers and friends who came to help support me while I was out eating with my family.

Local Rotary Club Helps Fund My Trip!

On November 1st, I had the chance to speak at the Rotary Club in Johnsonburg about my trip to Canada. They made a nice contribution to my trip and I will get to go back and speak again in June after my trip to share my expeiences while in Canada.
Here's the article in that was in the Johnsonburg Press (newspaper) about me.

People To People Student Ambassador Layton Yarus At Rotary Monday
Pictured is Jack Fowler with Layton and Kerri Yarus. Layton has been nominated and selected to be a student ambassador to western Canada in June next year.
The son of Kerri and Cory Yarus of Treasure Lake he is the grandson of Joyce and Aljoe Maletto of Johnsonburg, Sue and George Yarus of Treasure Lake. Layton is a 5th grade student at the Oklahoma Elementary School in DuBois.
After a nomination from an anonymous person he was called for an interview and selected to be a student ambassador in the People to People organization. People to People was founded in 1956 by President Dwight Eisenhower to enhance international understanding and friendship through educational, cultural and humanitarian activities involving the exchange of ideas and experiences directly among people of different countries and diverse cultures. People to People Student Ambassador Programs offer students in grades 5-12 life-changing educational journeys that foster friendship, build the foundation for personal success, and offer unique access to people, places, and activities. Over the next few months he will be attending training sessions in Altoona with many of the students and chaperones he will be traveling with.
The program that Layton has been accepted into will travel to western Canada. While there the students will visit an Indian Reservation where they will build a teepee that will become their home for the next three days. They also will have the opportunity to tour glaciers in the area, and go on a whale watching tour. They will have a dinner meeting with Parliament to learn how the Canadian government transacts their business. Rotarians thanked Layton for coming, wished him well on the trip, and are looking forward to having him back to share his adventure.

Thanks for stopping by,

Layton

Canada Here I Come!!

Back in September, Layton had his interview and got the phone call he was dreaming of telling him that he has been accepted into the People to People Program to travel to Western Canada for two weeks in June 2011. Now, the race is on to raise $4,000.00 to fund this chance of a lifetime. We've begun some fundraising....Layton has spoke at Rotary Club in Johnsonburg which made a wonderful donation to his trip to get him started. I have ventured out into the craft fair circus to try and sell some of my scrapbooking items and did very well this past week, but we still have a long way to go. I decided to create this little blog for family and friends to keep track of Layton's journey and also to share with everyone what we will be doing to raise money for him!

here's Layton at the Holiday Fest in Johnsonburg this past weekend!
Some upcoming fundraising:

*Saturday, December 4th at the Hoss's in Dubois all day long we will be having a "Community Day". Just show up present the card with Layton's information on it and 20% of your check will be donated back to him! If you are in the area and can help out please let me know so I can get you a card to present with your check!

*We will also be selling tickets for a 300 Club. Tickets cost are $5 each and we will have weekly cash drawings through the month of January. Tickets will be sold until December 31st, 2010.
